Day 1

So I called out today, thankful for the snow and ice, which gave me an excuse and solved the problem of my not having enough gas to make it to work before payday. I knew I only had enough for one days trip to and fro.

We ran out of dog/cat food the other day. I gathered enough quarters together that we could pick up a couple of bags at the dollar store. I found a Wal-Mart 'roll' of ground beef in the freezer and used it to make crock pot chili for us humans. I was pretty hard-up to stretch this food so I added in a couple of the canned goods Dad had brought up from the food bank. I have to thank him for that. Normally I'd try and pass them along by re-donating them locally, but this time I was glad they were on hand. Generic brand, no sodium mixed vegetables and several different types of canned beans, along with crushed tomatoes stretched the chili for several meals. Even the dogs and cats had some.

This morning I was very hungry. The cats had knocked over the oatmeal so we scooped it up from the floor. I cooked it and put a chicken bouilon cube in the water and the younger kittens were very eager to eat it up. I tried the same trick this morning for the older cats but they wouldn't go for it. I mixed in some of the leftover chili and that was all she wrote. They ate that and looked for more!

The girls had been giving the cats extra milk to help keep them full so there was not much left. I put just enough milk in the bowl to cover the bottom and added water after filling it with Cheerios. I'm somewhat lactose intolerant so I do this sort of thing sometimes anyhow so that I can still have dairy. It tasted fine and kept me full for a couple of hours.
